Origin of the meme

Water monke / "searching for the sea banana" is a long-running monke meme, not a single random clip. The footage is CGI from a TV spot for Donkey Kong Country on Game Boy Advance, filmed before the June 9, 2003 release. A gorilla swims through fish while a line says only in Donkey Kong Country.

The format blew up in mid-2020: a screenshot and the text "SEARCHING FOR The sea banana" hit iFunny (July 25, 2020), then moved through Reddit, YouTube, and edits. People started calling the guy water monke. Edits with Dire Dire Docks, Sanctuary Guardian, and full video riffs racked up huge views, and the still became a Know Your Meme entry with 40k+ confirms.

Same appeal as every good ape line: a dumb serious quest, water physics, and the promise of a fruit that is never in frame. Sea banana is the white whale; water monke is the crew.

  • 2003 GBA ad: underwater ape, voiceover in the game spot.
  • 2020 / Jul The sea banana macro, then Reddit and reposts.
  • 2020+ YouTube, names like water monke, KYM page, and endless riffs.
